Inherent Value

You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anybody.
— Maya Angelou

Imagine a talk where the speaker holds up a crisp new $100 bill. Then he asks the audience who wants the bill. You know every hand will shoot up. Then suppose he crumples the bill and asks who still wants it. Still, every hand is raised. Then he stamps on the bill and crushes it into the floor, twisting and grinding it with his shoe. Who wants it now? That’s right – everyone still wants that $100 bill, because it has inherent value.

You know what else has inherent value? You do. I do. We all have inherent value that sometimes we forget to recognize.

Part of becoming victorious is to recognize the inherent value of my whole self, including my knowledge, my relationships, and my energy – and remind myself daily to appreciate, recognize and capitalize on that value. Just like any item of value, it can fluctuate, but it is always there, gaining value with interest over time, as we accrue experience and add to that value. Just like that monthly deposit in our savings or a monthly mortgage payment, daily I must remind myself that storing a bit of the day’s energy for the future is important. Energy and self-worth, like all capital, it is all too easy to deplete, and it must remain protected for the future.
